Acoustics is a scientific term concerning the properties of sound. There are performance standards to adhere to when designing buildings, such as Building Bulletin 93 for school buildings, Healthcare Technical Memorandum 08-01 for healthcare buildings, and building regulations outlined in Approved Document E for England and Wales and Technical Handbooks Section 5 for Scotland. An Acoustic Engineer should be consulted for guidance on how to insulate building elements to achieve particular acoustic goals and to provide acoustic calculations. We have recently published two Technical Bulletins concerning Rain Impact Noise and Airborne Sound Transmission. Rain Impact Noise, measured in area-weighted sound intensity level LIA (dB), concerns the amount of direct impact sound transmitted from pouring rain falling onto the outside of a roof to the inside of a building. The lower the value, the better. Airborne Sound Transmission, measured in area-weighted Sound Reduction Index Rw (dB), concerns the amount of direct sound transmitted from one room or building to another, or from outside to inside, via roofs, floors and walls. The higher the value, the better.
