KoolDuct for Glasgow Transport Museum

Glasgow’s stunning new £74 million museum, on the banks of the rivers Clyde and Kelvin, has taken full advantage of the space saving and single-fix installation benefits offered by Kingspan’s KoolDuct System.
The Riverside Museum of Travel and Transport, majority-funded by Glasgow City Council and built by BAM Construct UK, has proved a huge success since opening its doors to the public. The Museum has welcomed over 1,000,000 visitors in the first six months alone.
Maximizing the effect of the fluid and futuristic building design from multi-award winning architect, Zaha Hadid, was a key factor for the 7000m² exhibition space. To achieve this, all building services, including the air-distribution ductwork system, had to be concealed.  As a result all services were routed through a vast network of trenches beneath the museum floor, ensuring that the exhibition area maintained its clean, open and contemporary feel throughout.
Space within the trenches was tightly restricted and this made the Kingspan KoolDuct System of pre-insulated HVAC ductwork the ideal choice, thanks to its space saving abilities. The space that is normally required to manually lag ductwork is eliminated with the KoolDuct System, since it has a single-fix install comprising ductwork and insulation in one. This allows it to be fixed flush to surfaces, typically saving up to 200 mm in a single dimension.
Ductform Ventilation UK Ltd. was responsible for the fabrication and installation of the Kingspan KoolDuct System. A representative from the company said: “We fabricate and install the KoolDuct System on many of our projects and would highly recommend it to others. This however was a bespoke hybrid design that incorporated Kingspan KoolDuct panels into innovative modular frames which we designed and developed at the outset. ”
“A key challenge with the Riverside Museum was ensuring that the ductwork system would fit within the trenches. With a traditional system this would have been challenging because externally fitting insulation makes it difficult to ensure the system’s final dimensions. By using the single-fix KoolDuct System, we were able to guarantee the final dimensions of the ductwork and so construct it to within millimeters of the trench’s dimensions for optimal performance.”
The superior thermal efficiency of the premium performance insulation panels used for the ductwork, further contributed to space savings. With a thermal conductivity of 0.021 W/m.K, Kingspan KoolDuct panels are the most thermally efficient, and hence the thinnest, insulation product commonly used for pre–insulated HVAC ductwork.
The Riverside Museum is packed full of fascinating displays and hands-on activities for families. The wide range of transport on display include: a Victorian tall ship, a South African steam locomotive and a “wall of motorbikes”. Lawrence Fitzgerald, Project Director for Riverside Museum at building clients Glasgow Life said: “We are delighted with the spectacular design for the museum and visitor numbers have already far exceed our expectations”.
