The Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System has been installed as part of the refurbishment and expansion of a detached, four bedroom villa on the beach front in Bognor Regis.
The homeowner acted as architect on the project, which included the creation of a new loft study along with a full length rear extension on the ground floor. The roof of this extension forms a spacious first floor terrace, providing spectacular views of the costal scenery.
Originally PIR insulation was specified for the balcony floor. However, the product thickness required to achieve the target U-value of 0.19 W/m2.K would have necessitated either a step-up between the internal room and balcony, or ceiling heights to be reduced in the room below. The outstanding thermal performance of the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System
allowed the U-value to be achieved with a far slimmer build-up.
Kingspan OPTIM-R Panels feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope. This allows them achieve thermal conductivities as low as 0.007 W/m. K, up to five times better than other commonly used insulation products.
A layer of 40 mm thick OPTIM-R Panels were installed on the roof along with a matching thickness of OPTIM-R flex infill strips. The infills can be cut to fit around penetrations or to fill awkward spaces. To complete the build-up, 25mm thick Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM
was then overlaid followed with a waterproof membrane and the final balcony flooring.
The architect commented:
“By fitting the Kingspan OPTIM-R system rather than the original PIR specification, we were able to greatly reduce the thickness of the balcony floor construction. Kingspan Insulation also provided us with the specific designs and layouts for the Kingspan OPTIM-R panels to ensure the installation all went smoothly.”
The detailed layouts provided by Kingspan’s specialist technical team ensure that target U-values can be achieved with the thinnest possible construction.
